CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Thousands of South Carolina students are
getting some fresh air as they take part in International Walk to
School Day.
The State Department of Transportation estimates that more than
61,000 students from more than 120 schools across the state are
taking part in events on Wednesday.
The event is being observed in more than 40 countries.
Many schools encourage students to talk to classes from their
homes with an adult and in groups. Other schools are hosting Walk
At School events.
The day is part of an effort to create safer routes for children
to walk and ride their bikes to school.
