St. Michael's Students Learn Furniture Design

We all know the regular school lessons - reading, writing, and arithmetic...but for some students it's about learning lessons while thinking outside the box.

I visited a classroom at St. Michael's Catholic School on Tybee Island to see how a SCAD grad is teaching with furniture.

Lacey Campbell is teaching students at St. Michael's Catholic School about the design process. They're working on designing desks.

"It's pretty cool because it's something different. I really never had that before,” says 14-year old 8th grader, Mason Lowery.

"The most important part is that it's a hands on experience and the ability to work with an expert is something like this is something that I think is unique to our school, that we're able to do this because of our small classrooms sizes,” says Holly Lanford, principal at St. Michael’s Catholic School.

“I like teaching people about design because it's something that I never was taught. I got to craft things out of play with popsicle sticks and stuff but to have the idea of making furniture wasn't ever there,” says furniture designer, Lacey Campbell.

"It's gonna have a place for an iPod and like some little speakers up here to where it's not loud but it's something that you can listen to when you're doing your work and all and it's gonna have wheels so you can wheel it from class to class,” Mason explains his design.

Putting an iPod in a desk may seem a little far fetched if you're a teacher, a principal or a parent, but according to design professionals, it really is the wave of the future.

“It may not be that they're listening to music, but they're listening to books,” adds Campbell.

Or even watching a how-to video on you-tube.

The students are having a contest to see who has the best desk designs. The design plans have to be functional and environmentally friendly.
