What do basketball and books have in common? This weekend, area churches and community organizations hope to connect the two by scoring points with kids as they hit the hardwood in an effort to increase literacy. The goal, to assist First Book-Savannah/Chatham County in providing brand new books to children in need all year long.

First Book's purpose is to address one of the most important factors affecting literacy - access to books. Nationally, First Book has distributed more than 60 million free and low cost books to disadvantaged children and the programs that serve them. Locally, the Savannah Advisory Board of First Book has given out more than 14,000 books to children since 2002.

Area churches and community organizations hope to do more. This Saturday, from 4 pm to 8 pm, teams will compete in a basketball tournament at Savannah's St.Pius gymnasium to raise money for the cause. Green Grove, St. Mark, Happy Home, Second Arnold and the Cloverdale Grizzlies will suit up for the charity game.

Admission for the game is $2. Each team has an entry fee of $20 dollars. Food and refreshments will also be available. All proceeds and contributions will be donated to First Book.
