It's been just over five years since a man was found beaten and naked near the dumpsters behind a Richmond Hill Burger King. He didn't know who he was then and today he still doesn't. It's been five years of newspaper articles, TV appearances and research...but the man - who goes by the name Benjaman Kyle - is no closer today to knowing who he is than he was when he was found beaten on August 31st, 2004. “Actually I think you know, since it has been 5 years - I think the odds of finding something are getting less and less - all the obvious things have been tried and there's been not much luck,” says Kyle.
He's been on local broadcasts and national television - Dr. Phil earlier this year even brought in a linguist to try to place his speech pattern and opened up a tip-line for phone calls...some came, but none panned out. The latest efforts revolve around DNA matching in a national database...
“If they knew what my last name was - and if they knew my last name was Powell - they could say that I’m definitely related to some of the people that are already in that database back in the last 2 or 3 generations, if my last name was Powell - but we don't know that of course,” says Kyle.
Recently - the GBI has gotten involved - his picture, fingerprints and dental records placed in the National Crime Information database - hopes of finding a match through missing person reports - so far no luck. His picture being run through facial recognition software to search databases of driver's license photos...but few states have it in place and it usually only goes back so far.
“I really try not to think about it too much. I think if I harped on it or you just concentrated on it, then you know, that's all I’d worked at - I’d go nuts,” says Kyle. So for now his question – “Who am I?” - goes unanswered. If you would like to keep up with Benjaman Kyle’s search for his true identity - there's a regularly updated entry on Wikipedia.
