"I know how a little kid feels the first time he's able to walk," explains Christopher Lowe. "Its so awesome being able to be upright again."

Its something most of us take for granted, but for Specialist Christopher "Kit" Lowe, a few steps from the bed to the bathroom is a big event.

"Just that little bit makes me so happy that I can do it without being in a chair."

Lowe still has a hole in his leg where the bullet went in, and has to relearn how to walk all over again.

His other issue is not physical but mental. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

"I'm very aware of whats going on around me, but then I have flashbacks," said Lowe. "Its like watching a film of what happened over and over again."

Psychiatrists and Physical Therapy are now part of his weekly routine. But Lowe knows its better than the alternative, death. That's something the family of his friend, Captain Matthew Freeman, deals with every day.

"I wake up every day and i'm ten times more grateful i'm here," said Chrstopher. "At the same time I feel really bad that he's not, because I know that could have been me."

Freeman was killed during the same firefight Lowe was injured. At the Memorial Service at the Naval Academy, Lowe was given his Purple Heart by Freeman's Wife, and he gave her something in return, peace of mind.

"He did everything he was trained to do, it was just luck of the draw."

"I told them he did the right thing and they shouldn't worry about that "

Right now, Lowe is worried about a new project, one that was near and dear to his friend's heart. A school supply drive for Afghani Children.

"Their faces light up like its Christmas when you give them a pen and paper. They are so happy because they don't have that out there."

While he wants to make a difference in kids' lives.. Lowe says they aren't his only focus.

"I'm doing this for him because he's not here to do it himself."

If you would like help specialist lowe and donate school supplies to Afghani children, you can drop them off during business hours at colonial quilts on Largo drive in Savannah.
