SAVANNAH, Ga. -- In today's world of instant communication, local companies are catching on to the power of social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter to help draw in customers.
The award-winning Wiley's Championship BBQ on Whitemarsh Island just celebrated its first anniversary. Owner Janet McCrary is a former teacher who used Facebook in education, so it made sense to use it now.
"I understood the value of social networking even within a school, so it was very easy to see the transfer to a business," said McCrary.
Wiley's has several online pages that McCrary updates herself. "I will Facebook and then it links to Twitter and put up... what our specials are for the day or if we're doing something special like going to compete in a contest," she said.
McCrary said they've gotten a good response. "You have a lot of followers who just like to check in and say oh what's going on at Wiley's and you know I'll check on my friends and see what's up, so it's important to stay current," she said.
WIley's customers say they enjoy using the social media sites to stay up to date.
"It's great to know specials, if someone's having a sale or a special location of an event like a warehouse sale," said Scott Lerner.
Customers said they also enjoy being able to pick which businesses to follow. "Only favorites on Facebook, not necessarily everybody but someone like Wiley's I... follow on Facebook," said Lerner.
McCrary follows other local businesses through Facebook and Twitter and said it has become a very valuable tool. "The whole aspect of social networking is here to stay and especially in the business forum of today," she said.
