SAVANNAH, Ga. -- It's a startling statistic: one in four teenage girls has a sexually transmitted disease. On Friday, youth groups gathered to raise awareness about the need for better sex education.
The Youth Futures Authority, Chatham County Youth Commission, and other groups gathered at the Old Chatham County Courthouse for a rally.
They spoke out and signed petitions to support the Responsible Education About Life, or REAL, Act, a federal bill promoting comprehensive sex education.
"Over the last 10 plus years we have not seen an appreciable decrease in teen pregnancy rate or birth rate in this community, and part of that is we believe that kids need more information," said Edward Chisolm, executive director of the Youth Futures Authority.
"We want to know the facts, and we want to see change. everyday in Georgia, 63 teens are becoming pregnant. These are youth that do not want to be falling under that statistic and we don't want any of our peers to be a part of that statistic," said Tilly Isaacson, a member of the Youth Futures Authority.
The groups plan to deliver their completed petitions to Congressman John Barrow's office.
