It's been more than two years since six-year old Christopher Barrios was taken from a swing set near his home in Brunswick and never seen alive again. It took a week to find his body. Now, today the first of three people charged in his abduction and murder went on trial. David Edenfield lived with his wife and son across the street from the little boy at the time. He faces the death penalty if convicted. David Edenfield and his son George are accused of molesting and killing the little boy in March of '07, while his wife Peggy Edenfield watched. The little boy's body was found in a garbage bag left alongside a roadway.
David Edenfield sat stoic as opening arguments began in court Wednesday morning. The prosecutor laying out what he says were the last moments of 6 year old Christopher Barrios' life.
"Christopher Barrios didn't want to be there, he told them to let him go. He said, I want to leave, let me go, don't do this. I'm going to tell my parents," said prosecutor John Johnson. He says Christopher was stripped and sexually assaulted in a bedroom of the Edenfield's home before being choked to death by both father and son, “George Edenfield initially put his hands around Christopher’s neck and began to choke him and at that point in time, David Edenfield, who was participating in all of this, put his hands 'instinctively' as you will hear him say, on top of George Edenfield's hands and helped take the life of Christopher Barrios."
Some members of Barrios' family testified - his father Michael, telling of finding his son's toy light saber in front of the Edenfield's home shortly after he'd gone missing from a nearby swing set, “It was laying in the yard of Mr. Edenfield." Edenfield is pleading not guilty - his attorney pointing the finger at David’s son George who confessed to the murder, as well as his wife Peggy, who will testify against him as part of a deal. "The state will remove the death penalty against Peggy Edenfield and will also remove life without parole as a possibility of sentencing against Peggy Edenfield,” said James Yancy. Jurors from Jeff Davis County are sequestered in Glynn County for the three to five days the trial is expected to last.
