(Savannah) It's not "non" sense..... it's all about common sense. Whether it's H1N1 or regular flu, creating a basic, inexpensive flu kit is easy and smart.
"I've got two granddaughters. I would love to do that for them," says Donna Schafer. After a recent experience, Elaine Boyington believes the kits will help.
"I had to take a loved one to the hospital the other night and everyone had on masks. So it like scared me." First line of defense items can be found at any drug store. Here at this Walgreens, Store Manager Tom McCormick says he's selling about 100 bottles of trial hand sanitizer a week. That's one item on the centers for disease and control's combat kit list. The ethyl alcohol in it helps kill bacteria, and a travel size costs you 99 cents. Next, tissues to cover coughs and sneezes. These items are convenient and easy to slip into your purse, back pack, and pockets. Also on the list - baby wipes. You can quickly and easily wipe down anything. If you don't have one, don't forget a thermometer, sold for about 6 dollars. If you really get worried, you can also find masks for 5 bucks. The things on my shopping list cost less than 20 dollars. No, they won't cure the flu, but they may help you avoid infection. And Elaine says she wants to be prepared. "I'm just concerned for myself and my family. I just wish everyone would do the same thing. Maybe we can get this thing under control."
When putting together your flu kit... one item most people already have is soap and water. You should also consider over the counter fever and pain reducing medications like ibuprofen, and cold and cough medicines. Health officials say there's not much difference in h1n1 and the seasonal flu. What's important is what you do about it. Call your health care provider, and stay home if you're sick.
