Stopping a storm is out of our hands -- but shielding its winds from your home is getting a whole lot easier than the old fashion plywood method.
"You can actually do it yourself- no power tools required- for the first installation as well as every other installation. These will be permanently on your house, therefore all you have to do is go ahead and get the panel out, put it where it goes and you can hear the audible click,” a representative from Storm Stoppers said.
Storm Stoppers was just one of the companies showcasing their product at Hilton Head's Hurricane Forum and Expo. Most others targeted the aftermath: how to handle the water that's seeped into your carpet and even made it to the walls.
"This is an infrared camera. What it does is temperature differential, helps us find moisture inside the walls of the structure. What we do is we implore rapid structural dryings so we try not to rip anything out during the mitigation phase,” Peter Horseman from Rainbow International of the Lowcountry said.
And inside the forum is where perhaps the best sell for some of these products took place. Local emergency management leaders and The Weather Channel's Dr. Steve Lyons gave potential customers an understanding that this is serious stuff.
"The uniqueness of this area is it's low-lying area. If a big one comes this way- the area will be flooded- and people will drown if they don't get out,” Lyons said.
