Some local contractors are angry.
Angry because they don't feel enough of the $325 million construction price tag is going into local pockets.
But, this group, 150 strong- is adamant.....too much of the Mitsubishi job is going to people from outside Southeast Georgia.
Vince Drescher is the president of savannah and southeast construction labor council says he doesn't care who gets the work- as long as they are local.
“Well we went out to the ground breaking, we were hopeful that our contractors and our workers would get some work here, or at least our competitors and that just doesn't happen."
The plant granted the construction bid to an Atlanta based company, Baston-Cook.
But electrician, John Cela says the locals need the jobs.
“They are bringing people in from all around the state, and there are people at home who need jobs. Whether they are union or non-union. Everybody needs to work. We have a good town here and local people need to go to work.”
Mitsubishi's General Manager of Special Projects for Mitsubishi power tells a very different story.
Steve Woodall says Batson-Cook reports 88 percent of the sub contractors on the project are from Georgia and 60 percent are from Coastal counties.
He adds that he's pleased with the work being done by local contractors.
However, Drescher says locals should be defined only as residents of Chatham County and the surrounding area not those from northern Georgia...its simply not good enough.
