Could books soon be a thing of the past?
If St. Andrew’s School in Savannah has a say...yes.
The school is one of the first in the country to hand out iPads to every one of their students.
News Three’s Alice Massimi was there as this wave of technology hit the school.
The kids could barely contain themselves Friday morning.
“I am holding the iPad and it contains or it should contain later all my and books and schoolwork,“ says Grayson Barnhill is one of four hundred sixty students who will get an iPad...
“You can download apps it has maps you can also take your notes on it as well,” says Barnhill.
The students can't keep their hands off of them...
“I love it its awesome,” says 7th grader Macy Lobel.
Clicking and typing away.... they're exploring what the iPad has offer over their normal load of textbooks. Number one... the weight...
Students no longer need to worry about carrying around these bulky books now all they have to carry is their iPad.
“Books will slowly be fading out of the picture that's not to say they aren't going to exist,” says Peter Smith of St. Andrew’s School.
But St Andrew’s is putting its stock in new technology. No more out-of-date textbooks...the iPad solves that.
“I think we recognized an opportunity to improve the learning environment and offer students some of the tools that will really raise the bar as far as teaching and learning goes,” says Smith.
Hooked into an intricate wireless system, St Andrew’s is truly raising the bar.
“This wireless allows hundreds of users to sign on at the same time and have a good connection and receive their downloads. So it's a very innovative product and St Andrew’s is first to use in this area,” explains George Powers with iTech for Business
St. Andrew's is paying for the iPads with capital campaign money fundraising, and grant opportunities.
