Metro Police Step Up Enforcement On Parking And Commercial Truck Violations

Metro Police say the opening of school and an influx of complaints about illegal parking have prompted officers to increase enforcement of the city’s ordinance against parking on sidewalks and curbs and commercial trucks taking shortcuts down city streets.  Capt. Mike Wilkins, commander of the Downtown Precinct, says officers began issuing citations last week in response to numerous complaints about illegal parking in the Ben Van Clark neighborhood bounded by Waters Avenue, Truman Parkway and Wheaton and Anderson streets. Police say the problem was aggravated by the opening of the 2010-2011 school year this week.  “Blocked sidewalks prevent students from safely reaching their schools and bus stops, and force pedestrians to walk in the streets to avoid automobiles,” Capt. Wilkins said. “That is dangerous and intimidating to some of our residents and it can be damaging to the curbs, sidewalks and landscaping. They can be expensive to replace.”

Citations for the various offenses can range from $15 to $44.

Metro Police say they are also beginning to ticket drivers of commercial trucks abusing restrictions on using prohibited city streets such as Liberty and Oglethorpe Avenue.  Commercial trucks – those over 10,000-pound gross vehicle weight -- are restricted from many streets by state law and city ordinances. Drivers face fines of $127 for violating state codes or $340 for city ordinances banning them from those areas unless they are delivering, making pickups or performing work in those areas.
