(SPRINGFIELD, GA, February 2, 2010) The driver of car involved in a fatal crash Sunday night is now facing criminal charges. The front seat passenger in 56 year old Milton Roper's car was killed in the crash. Roper, of Guyton, has been arrested and charged with homicide by vehicle in the 1st degree, driving under the influence, failure to maintain lane, and failure to stop at a stop sign. The passenger, identified as 55 year old Napoleon Roper, also of Guyton, was pronounced dead on the scene. Hi body was taken to the GBI crime lab in Savannah for an autopsy. Effingham County Sheriff’s deputies and Georgia State Patrol Troopers were called to the intersection of Courthouse and Midland Roads around 8pm Sunday night on a report of an accident with injuries. There were no other serious injuries reported. The Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is also investigating. Effingham County Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie says, "DUI related crashes are on the rise in Effingham County which is why deputies will be increasing patrols throughout the county during the month of February." Milton is currently being held in the Effingham County Jail.
