SAVANNAH, Ga. - A sad story out of Pooler; an elderly woman robbed by two men posing as Census takers last week. News 3 spoke with local census workers who want to make sure the public knows how to tell the difference between them and imposters.
Anyone working for the Census will display a placard in their car. They are required to carry a canvas briefcase with the Census logo and wear an ID badge displayed above the waist.
Joe Egan, the man in charge of Savannah's Census office, also warns a real census worker should never ask to go inside your home, “It's disconcerting for us to have people that would use that as an excuse to try to get people to open up their homes to 'em and take advantage of 'em. Just be aware that no Census employee will ever want to go inside your home or ask for any kind of information such as credit card information or anything like that.”
No census workers are currently going door to door in our viewing area. Rural area homes could start getting visits in early March. Savannah won't likely see canvassers hit neighborhoods until April.
If someone come to your door and you're uncertain if it's a real census worker - call the local office at (912) 544-0040 and they should be able to tell you if someone's working in your neighborhood.
