FORT STEWART, Ga. -- Army officials said a 3rd Infantry Division soldier who refused to deploy with her unit because she claimed she had no one to watch her son has been granted an administrative discharge instead of going through trial by court martial.
Last month, Specialist Alexis Hutchinson was charged with missing in movement, absence without leave, dereliction of duty, and insubordinate conduct toward a non commissioned officer.
Fort Stewart officials said the decision to grant the administrative discharge was made Thursday. The Army said Hutchinson's request for a discharge included an admission of guilt.
As a result, Hutchinson will not be at risk of a federal conviction, officials said, but she is being reduced to the lowest enlisted rank, private, and may lose benefits from the Army and Department of Veterans Affairs.
According to a 3rd ID press release, the Army found evidence that conflicted from Hutchinson's explanation of that she couldn't deploy because she didn't have anyone who could take care of her child.
"The investigation revealed evidence, from both other Soldiers and from Private Hutchinson herself, that she didn't intend to deploy to Afghanistan with her unit and deliberately sought ways out of the deployment," read the release.
