SAVANNAH, Ga. -- The recession has cost many folks their jobs, but a couple of Savannah neighbors have turned a so-called misfortune into a new opportunity to open their own business.
Lowcountry Liquidators is any bargain hunter's dream, filled with overstock and discontinued items from major stores at 50 percent or more off the retail price.
Owners Eric Walsnovich and Mark Grant lost their jobs at a Savannah engineering firm last year because of the recession.
"We got to talking and it sounded like a great opportunity for us to get involved and really help out the community," he said.
The store has everything from books and cabinets to couches and a stuffed turkey.
"We're going to make sure it's worthy of being sold. If it's an electronic it's going to work," said Walsnovich.
The store is only open Friday through Sunday so they can buy new stock during the week, but Monday shoppers were still showing up even when the store was closed: a promising sign.
"It takes a little bit of faith to walk through that door. We're very happy that we did. mainly because of the responses that we're hearing," he said.
Walsnovich said going out on their own seemed like the right choice and hopefully it'll pay off in the end.
"Is now the right time to open a new business, meaning that we're in a recession? We said yes. It's as best time as any. It's certainly going to prove us worthy if we can get through the recession."
Lowcountry Liquidators is located in the Westside Shopping Center on West Highway 80 in Garden City.
If they're successful, the owners hope to expand the business and open more stores around the area.
