It was a long time coming, but Savannah's Curbside Recycling Program is now a year old.
Like anything of that scope, there were some rough spots at first but now about half of the city's households take part and the amount of recyclables continues to climb.
News Three’s Community Reporter Alice Massimi visited the growing operation to see how it's keeping up with your demands.
Mounds and mounds of ...no, not trash...these are recyclables.
“We have made a lot of progress. We have collected well over 6,500 tons, which is a tremendous amount out of the landfill,” says Curtis Sanders the Director of Savannah’s Recycling Effort.
It’s a program that now brings in roughly 600 tons of recyclables a month.
“We want to increase by 5 percent and get at least 60 businesses signed up for commercial recycling.”
That's right the city is now getting businesses involved in the push to go green.
Expecting growth Pratt Industries which sorts and sells Savannah's recyclables is gearing up.
Previously all of Savannah's recycling was shipped up to North Carolina. Just a couple of months ago they began to sort the items in house. Individuals are in charge of picking out paper plastic and aluminum.
Sanders says there is no downside to this growing trend...
“For one, we are actually saving landfill space and two; this provides everyone a unique opportunity to do their part to help the environment.”
Something to think about before you toss that soda can in the trash.
Savannah leads the way for many other communities in the area.
Tybee Island, Port Wentworth and Garden City now also offer recycling to those who live in the area.
