As local support continues for relief efforts in Haiti, one group of area young people has pledged to make a difference with their talent. The arts education non-profit All Walks of Life, Inc. (AWOL) will announce during a news conference tomorrow that it will donate half of the proceeds from an upcoming performance to help the victims of the tragic earthquake.
Because the major theme of the play, "Choices: A Romeo and Juliet Story" is love, AWOL's effort to raise donations will be known as "To Haiti With Love." The annual production is the culmination of AWOL's theater program called Act Up. Performances are scheduled to run February 5 and 6 at the Lucas Theatre at 7 p.m.
The play features nearly fifty local young people, who've been working for the past six months on acting and choreography. When news of the disaster in Haiti hit, everyone agreed that they needed to find a way to help.
AWOL will be joined by State Representative J. Craig Gordon who will serve as the lead spokesperson for the project, Cumulus broadcast station E-93, and Cricket Wireless in their efforts to raise funds, which will be officially announced at a news conference on Friday, 1/22 at 12:00 noon
Like many organizations, the non-profit group is experiencing its own budget shortfall, but has decided to continue to support those most in need in other parts of the world. "This effort by AWOL, to donate money to the people of Haiti, in a time when their own financing is being cut short, just shows that their hearts and souls are always in the right place" says J. Craig Gordon, State Representative District 162.
