West Broad Y Gets Pre-K Program

State- Funded Pre-K program for 20 Savannah Kids.

Even though this looks like all fun and play, it's not. Summer Camp at The West Broad Street YMCA is intense. kids are busy making the connection… improving their cognitive skills. "These pieces are all necessary for a good learning environment and as there's increased pressure in the grade school level even to perform and to read have to create a way that they can learn early," says Peter Doliber. Now, thanks to Georgia's Lottery-Funded Pre-K Program, more kids will get the opportunity to expand their knowledge sooner than later. The State is making a positive investment in the "Y."
Its been selected as a new Pre-K site. "This will really give them a better foundation. Studies show the earlier you can start the better the opportunity for that child to grow and develop," says Doliber. Assistant Teacher LaShonda Johnson says the program is right on time. "It will prepare them for the basic learning needs which is shapes, colors, social skills…. how to get along with other students." Often times parents are puzzled not knowing if they will be able to send their children to a Pre-K Program. They really want to though, but their financial situation may not allow them to.
"The cost is a big factor for a lot of people. So to have a free program that they can get into that’s of high quality…the children are learning. It prepares them better for school. It's a dream come true for so many parents."
Doliber says here are only 20 slots available for the Pre-K Program.   So it's first come first serve.
Registration opens Monday, August 2nd.
