City of Savannah crews responded to a sewage spill at north dead end of Ewell Street on Tuesday morning.

An estimated 20,472 gallons of sewage overflowed a manhole due to a grease blockage in the sanitary sewer collection system. The sewage flowed into a drainage ditch, which flows into the Little Ogeechee River. This amount classifies as a major spill under Environmental Protection Division guidelines.

City of Savannah Sanitary Sewer Maintenance workers cleared the blockage around 9:14 a.m. Tuesday, July 27, about 45 minutes after being notified of the spill. It was determined at the time that the spill had occurred over the weekend.

Crews continue to clean up the area and perform maintenance on the sewer main. Lime will be spread over areas of the ditch that have been affected.
