The official ribbon cutting for the new Regional Police Academy in Garden City took place Wednesday afternoon. The Georgia Public Safety Training Center Regional Academy will serve as a state of the art training center for coastal Georgia law enforcement officers. The Academy provides required certification training for new law enforcement officers in a 19 county region. The 10,500 square foot facility offers 10 week basic training sessions for police officers. Garden City Police Chief David Lyons says, "To finally get to this point and get this thing opened is a really big deal and is important not only for Garden City, but it's important for the public safety training center that they now have their own academy facility that they own outright." Chief Lyons says that will save taxpayers about $70,000 dollars a year that the Training Center was paying to lease space at Armstrong.
