The beating of a gay man in Savannah allegedly at the hands of two Marines has many folks calling for action. Activists and concerned citizens gathered for a rally in Johnson square-- where Kieran Daly, a 26-year old gay man, says the attack took place. They called for a stop to the violence and for Georgia to pass a hate crime law.
Kevin Clark, who heads the Savannah Chapter of Georgia Equality, says Daly's attack is just one of several hate crimes which occurred in Savannah in the past five years. Clark would like to see more response from elected leaders and police. "It should only take one or two individuals who have been attacked or know of others who have been attacked to get the attention of someone in leadership in this community-- that in our opinion should have stepped forward way before now and condemned the violence and put out a loud call for swift just action here," says Clark. Several men, who say they were also attacked because of their sexual orientation, also spoke to the crowd.
The two Marines, Keil Joseph Cronauer and Christopher Charles Stanzel, are both stationed in Beaufort, SC. Military officials say they are investigating. The FBI says it is also looking at the incident as a possible hate crime.
