Democrats Move Forward with Health Reform Push

»  Comments | Post a Comment

His health care summit behind him, what's President Obama's next step?

Nancy-Ann DeParle, White House Office of Health Care Reform Director said, "He's going to have more to say later this week about how he thinks is the best way to move forward."

The outline of Democrats' plan is taking shape.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said, "We're here to do the job for the American people to get them results."

First, Pelosi would have to convince House Democrats to pass the Senate reform measure.

Could she?

Wisconsin Representative Paul Ryan said, "I would not count her out because she is very good at muscling votes."

Part of Pelosi's pitch to wavering Democrats would be a promise, negotiated tomorrow, that Senate Democrats would change key parts of the bill.

Dropping the special deal for Nebraska, for instance, and do it using simple majority rules.

Republicans call it an end run around what voters want.

Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander said, "It would be a political kamikaze mission for the Democratic Party if they jam this through."

Polls do show Americans oppose the measure but want reform.

New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez said, "The American people, I think, have said in the polls that they want to see us move forward on health care reform."

Barack Obama got his first medical check up as President Sunday.

Doctors concluded he hasn't kicked the smoking habit and needs to lower his cholesterol. Otherwise, they called his health excellent.
