A follow up on the five Savannah State football players involved in an aggravated assault case. The five are accused of brutally beating two fellow SSU students last month. Last week a judge denied them all bond. Now one of the player’s parent’s is speaking out.
No bond - that's the last thing Juvaro Goodman, Sr was expecting to hear from the Judge when he appeared at his son's hearing in Chatham County Recorder's Court last week, “We were very just discouraged for the judge not to give these young men a bond, like I said, they have no criminal background - they've been in school for several years.” The crime they're accused of is serious and Judge Tammy Stokes cited the risk to the community in denying bond....but Goodman says none of the five accused are from the Savannah area and would have returned home with their families who were in court last Tuesday. He doesn't understand how after more than a month already spent behind bars - his son can be held for potentially weeks or even months more awaiting a possible grand jury indictment.
Goodman also says he's been disappointed by the lack of help or information from Savannah State, “We didn't know that they were actually in jail for about 4 days after they were in jail - no phone call from anybody at the university...no phone call from the coaches, so you know - they've pretty much taken a step back from this situation.” Goodman, Sr says he's had no word from the University on his son's status there - but heard from another parent that their son had his scholarship revoked and had been expelled.
We've so far been unable to get confirmation from Savannah State as to the player's status with the University and the team...but a spokesperson did confirm that assault - is considered a zero tolerance offense and expulsion is an option.
