At least nine deaths and hundreds of illnesses were linked to a salmonella outbreak last year that began in a Georgia peanut processing plant.
Today the house voted 142-20 to approve a bill to make it a felony to knowingly distribute a tainted food product.
The bill comes with stiffer penalties as well: Up to 20 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
Right now plants have 24 hours to alert state inspectors if internal tests show their products are tainted.
Under the new bill, failure to do so will be a misdemeanor.
