Saint Patrick’s Day decorations aren't the only green you will see around Savannah. Chatham Area Transit is going green.
As News Three’s Alice Massimi explains it's saving money and the environment.
You've probably spotted these big green buses driving around Savannah...
It's not Chatham Area Transit's new color scheme but their move to be green...the buses are hybrids.
“They are very good for the environment. Somebody made a comment to us, called into our comment line and said thank you for the hybrid buses. I see no fumes coming out of the exhaust system,” says C.A.T.'s Executive Director Charles Odimgbe.
Odimgbe explains it's because these buses rely more on battery power.
“A hybrid has a much larger transmission and a smaller engine because the performance is going between a battery and the diesel. So at a certain speed it will run off of the electric it generates from the battery and at other speed it will go back to the diesel.”
C.A.T. has 11 hybrid buses already and 9 more on order thanks to some stimulus money.
“We've made a decision internally all of our buses will be going hybrid. We will no longer buy regular diesel buses.”
The hybrids cost more but they're worth the extra cash.
“The hybrid buses are going to save us approximately 557 thousand annually in diesel fuel.”
Passengers also prefer the hybrid bus saying it's a much smoother ride and a stop on the route to a cleaner future for the area.
Originally cat was planning on changing the colors of the hybrid buses but they say the community loves the bright green so it will stay.
