Beer bottles, boats, even old refrigerators…just a few items that always wind up in the collection pile at the May River cleanup in Bluffton. The 10th annual event takes place this Saturday and all those years of work are really paying off.
“Initially the problem was that people would use things like refrigerators, roofing, fencing, lawn chairs- as a way to stabilize the bank,” Friends of the Rivers’ Nancy Schilling said. “And now we have new methods- we know what best management practices are so now we find that virtually just things that have fallen off of docks or blown out of boats over the past year.”
If you want to help out, the 10th annual May River Cleanup is this Saturday from 8am-noon. Volunteers will meet at the Bluffton Oyster Factory Park on Wharf Street.
