GUYTON, Ga. -- Michael Maddox enjoys living and farming on the land that's been in his family for generations. As he raised his own organic vegetables in the serene setting, he came up with the vision for an environmentally-friendly community.
"We've just kind of become a throwaway society... We don't save. We don't recycle, although we are making strides," said Maddox.
He came up with Green Bridge Farm. The name comes from the plants, which he sees as the bridge between man and nature. The development consists of 25 acres of land, with nine lots of varying sizes currently for sale.
The homes will be built to green standards.
"Living sustainably, which basically means you don't use so much that there's none left," he said.
The Green Bridge Farm community will have about four acres of community space that will include a community vegetable garden and fruit orchard. Maddox said gardening won't be mandatory for those who live here, but he will encourage it.
"There's immediate gratification, but there's also gratification knowing that in a small way you're doing something to improve the world," said Maddox.
Maddox hopes to see his project become an example for the rest of Effingham County, and he's pleased there has been so much interest from others who want to see his dream become a reality.
"Living like there's going to be a future, and you're helping create the future, rather than living for the present," said Maddox.
Maddox has been developing Green Bridge Farm over the past three years. He expects two of the lots to be sold in the next month.
