Andrea Spain asked this question about dairy products.
“ I've noticed for a while now that whenever I eat anything with cheese or even drink a glass or milk my stomach cramps and I have to go.
I pretty much have stopped drinking anything with milk or cheese in it. Could I be lactose intolerant? If so what kind of vitamins should I take to make up for calcium loss?
I took Andrea’s question to Dr. Branden Hunter of Gastroenterology Consultants of Savannah.
He told me "We do see patients with lactose intolerance that do avoid milk and dairy products become osteopenic and develop osteoporosis. and so it's important that they do get calcium and vitamin supplementation. those can often times be done by over- the-counter supplements with oral calcium gluconate or oral calcium carbonate...but certainly should be done under the setting of a doctor's supervision."
Dr. Hunter says Tums and Oscal will provide the vitamins you need.
Another question from Amber Stafford –“What causes severe stabbing pain in the lower abdomen and back area when you have a BM or bowel movement?”
The answer from Dr. Hunter is that "it's very common for patients with difficulties with constipation to sometimes have intestinal spasm or bloating or cramps. And typically will resolve with improvement of bile regularity, but certainly other things can cause abdominal pain as well, and I would urge her to seek medical attention to have that evaluated."
