Last month the Heritage Classic Foundation announced the Heritage golf tournament is making a change in their schedule. The tournament is a week later than usual. And now, Beaufort County public schools, and some private ones, are following suit. For years it's been tradition Heritage days means no school days for Beaufort County kids.
There's no green, no little white ball, and certainly no silence in the playground at Sea Pines Montessori Academy, but in a sense, they’re playing in the name of golf.
"We wouldn't be able to offer this amazing facility without this partnership,” SPMA Principal Darcie Patrick said.
The Heritage Classic Foundation, which brings the Heritage golf tournament to Harbourtown every year, allows their school to set up a concession stand. Each year they net about $30,000 dollars for their school. So when the tourney announced they've got a new date next year, Principal Darcie Patrick announced these kids have a new spring break.
"When something is that important to your friends and neighbors, it becomes important to you,” Patrick said.
Beaufort County School Board member Laura Bush said there are primarily two reasons why they adjust their calendars for the Heritage. Number one, they take advantage of the fundraising opportunities, but also it's about traffic. They don't want the school buses competing with the traffic that's heading to Harbourtown.
Patrick said it’s the same case with them.
“Our roads and our patterns are a little different so for the safety of the children it's better that they're in the parents control and in the parents cars and a little safer because we are so close,” Patrick said.
The tournament dates for 2011 are April 18th through the 24th. The plan is a one-year switch then they'll go back to the old schedule.
