UPDATE: South Carolina Highway Patrol tells News Three the driver of the bus - 29 year old Laquana Howard of St. Helena Island - has been charged with driving too fast for conditions.
ORIGINAL STORY:
One child is transported to the hospital after a morning bus accident in Bluffton.
It was around 7 a.m. Tuesday on Old Miller Road. The children were on their way to Bluffton Middle School. The child taken to the hospital complained of hip pain.
The bus was found on its side in a ditch. The driver, who was pinned for about 45 minutes, was apparently trying to avoid a herd of deer. It's estimated that 18 to 19 children were on the bus at the time.
No other vehicle was involved.
A school district official says they're proud of how the children reacted, crediting a bus drill just two weeks ago that taught them how to evacuate during emergencies.
Any new information received will be posted here as it's received.
