(Savannah, Ga.) Parents you're encouraged to make sure your child's immunizations are up to date before they arrive to school.
There are different vaccinations depending on your child’s age.
Immunizations for school kids is the topic of today's health question from facebook.
Pamela writes- “My grandchildren will be entering school this year. Exactly what immunizations are required prior to kindergartners entering school.
"For children entering kindergarten typically the immunizations they would need would their tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis booster, DTaP, Measles, Mumps, and Rubella which is all in one vaccine MMR. Their inactivated polio, and for many children their second shot of Varicella. That would be the typical vaccines. Of course that also depends on what they've received in the past," says Dr. Diane Weems.
Your health care provider will review that information with you when you make your visit.
Pamela also wanted to know if the health department is open weekends specifically for back to school immunizations.
"The Chatham County Health Department has always done walk-in immunizations. We don't require appointments, but we will not be doing weekends this year. Budget and staffing just hasn't allowed that."
Meanwhile, Dr. Weems says when children engage with large groups they're more at risk for contagious diseases.
You can prevent and protect against diseases by having your child immunized.
"School setting any kind of congregate setting is a great opportunity to share germs. So it is so important to prevent diseases...the diseases we can through vaccination and it is through the vaccination of all of Our children that we protect those who can't be vaccinated."
If you choose the health department for your child's immunizations you're encouraged to come early Monday through Friday for walk-in service.
"Especially if they have multiple children. It takes a while to process. Be prepared to wait. The closer we get to school the larger the crowds."
In Georgia, childhood vaccinations are required to protect all children in school.
There is a provision that allows religious exemption.
Just check with your doctor of the health department.
