(Savannah, GA) Maria Small finds joy in being alive.
"I broke my foot, and the doctor turned around and said you know you haven't had a mammogram in over 11 years? I think you need to go."
In October a routine mammogram caught Maria's breast cancer.
"I was crying, and I even turned around and told my husband well I don't think we're gonna have any treatments. We just have to see what goes and again that's when my cancer navigator Krista Alifi told me Georgia has programs that can help you."
Uninsured, the mammography fund at Telfair Pavilion met Maria's medical needs.
"They took care of everything for me and so far I haven't had to worry about a bill yet."
Maria is going through radiation treatments.
And since she's overcome her financial hurdle she's getting women to be proactive about their own breast health. Her priority now is to get people involved in WSAV's Buddy Check 3 Program.
"I have 26 people on my buddy check for every third of the month. And how we do this when I add one person to my list ask that person to add a person to their list and we're trying to do by the end of next year to have 1,000 people on our list."
Maria Small, an example of how early detection pays off.
"I make it a point again to tell people to do that monthly check. Make sure you go once a year and have a mammogram."
Meanwhile, Maria pays close attention to her health and treatments.
"22 more ok."
Maria told me she's feeling great.
She has one more chemotherapy treatment, and her last radiation therapy is January 6th.
Last year more than 600 breast health procedures were paid for through the mammography fund
