(Savannah, GA) The American Cancer Society estimates more than 230,000 U.S. women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.
Our facebook fan Betsy writes- “What are the surgical options to remove breast cancer?
Dr. Howard Zaren, Medical Director at the Lewis Cancer and Research Pavilion says one option is breast conservation surgery.
“That means we remove a portion of the breast and leave most of the breast intact, but making sure that we get the cancer out and there's a negative margin. It means that all around the cancer there's normal tissue. And if we can do that and still leave a cosmetically pleasing breast then that's breast conservation surgery."
The other option is a mastectomy.
That's where all the breast is removed.
Surgeons can reconstruct the breast using an expander.
"We can ultimately put a breast like implant in there. We can make a new nipple, make a new areola of the breast, but the tactile sensation for a woman once you do that is lost. Cosmetically she may look great and certainly clothed she'll look great."
Dr. Zaren says sometimes the nipple and areola can be saved if there's no tumor in the ducts.
