HARTSVILLE, SC- A fertilizer plant in Hartsville is burning and fire departments from across the area are responding to fight the fire.
The Rainbow fertilizer plant, a 20,000-30,000 squre foot plant, erupted in flames before 7 p.m., according to broadcast traffic.
Seven people were inside the plant when the fire started, but they escaped safely.
WBTW News13 weather watcher Jason Hopkins has reported a large ball of smoke lit by fire visible from a distance as well as loud explosions.
The fire has spread into nearby woods and flaming debris is raining down on surrounding properties, according to broadcast reports form the scene.
Officials activated the state firefighter system to bring mutual aid from across state.
In addition to Hartsville Fire Department, units from Sonoco's fire brigade, Darlington, Darlington County, City of Florence, Lee County and Alligator Rural are either fighting the fire or standing by for additional response within the city.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
There were no reported injuries.
Hazardous materials and fumes from the fire were the main issues facing city officials.
Residents in the area were being allowed to leave, but no one was being allowed back into the area.
