Every two seconds a patient in the United States needs a blood transfusion
Blood and platelets can be used for accident and burn victims, heart surgery, organ transplant recipients, premature babies, and patients receiving treatment for cancer.
WSAV viewer, Kimberly Lewis sent this question in on our facebook page.
"Once you have cancer can you donate blood?"
Dean Smith, Blood Services District Manager with the American Red Cross in Savannah has the answer.
"We have a lot of people come in that have had cancer in the past and they ask that same question.  Normally as long as you've been cancer free for a year and the cancer was excised and removed everything is great as long as it's been 12 months you can give."
Smith says you cannot give blood if you have leukemia, melanoma, or hodgkins disease.
"If you've had any kind of cancer where you needed radiation or chemotherapy as long as its been over a year since your radiation your chemotherapy treatment you're still cancer free after a year and the doctor's released you no problem. You can absolutely give."
You can always call 1-800-733-2767 to set an appointment to donate blood.
