Savannah Fire Arson Investigators say Ortiz lived
A Savannah man was denied bond in Chatham County Recorder’s Court this morning on numerous felony charges related to an early April fire at a southside condominium complex.
SFES arson investigators say Ortiz lived at the condo complex at the time of the fire, which caused significant damage to his 2-story condo and moderate damage to an adjoining condo.
The fire also resulted in the death of a pet dog which was locked in a cage on the first floor of the residence. Savannah firefighters were able to rescue two dogs in the condo next door after forcing entry through the front door of that home.
SFES arson investigators say evidence at the scene indicates the fire was intentionally set and that accelerants were used to ignite the blaze.
Investigators believe the crimes were committed in an attempt to collect proceeds from a recently-purchased insurance policy on the residence and its contents.
Ortiz was denied bond Friday morning a Chatham County recorder court judge.
Ortiz remains at the Chatham County Detention Center awaiting a preliminary hearing, July 27th.
