Swimming pools are always hot summer attractions. Two years ago pools around the country added special drain covers.
The goal- keep swimmers from being held underwater from the powerful pools vacuum system suction. Now there's a massive recall.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission is issuing a voluntary recall of one million Pool nd Spa drain covers.
The covers, made by eight manufacturers have a design flaw.
The CPSC says pools with a single drain should be closed until covers are replaced.
You’re encouraged you to take the warning seriously.
"A main drain cover is a suction hazard unless it's properly fitted, and this particular recall deals with flow rates for those covers. And so if that cover is not sized appropriately, there is a hazard and a risk for someone who is swimming to become entrapped under water with these drains," says Chatham County Environmental Health Director Todd Jones.
Bucky Johnson with the YMCA of Coastal Georgia tells News 3 that they had one drain cover that was part of the recall list.
They're waiting on a new cover to come in and have since closed the small pool until replacement drains arrive.
If you're wondering, Barry Baker with the City of Savannah says none of the pools run by the city have drains that are on that recall list.
Misty Selph says the Chatham County Aquatic Center pools are not affected.
Most of the recalled products were sold between December 2008 and April 2011.
The manufacturers of the recalled drain covers are:
A&A Manufacturing
AquaStar Pool Products
Color Match Pool Fittings
Custom Molded Products
Hayward Pool Products
Pentair Water Pool and Spa
Rising Dragon USA
Waterway Plastics
The CPSC said not all drain covers will need to be replaced. If you have questions concerning your pool and drain cover, call 866-478-3521 or you'll find more information when you click here
