Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal and his wife received free perks from Delta Air Lines after signing into law a tax break for the company.
Delta reported that it gave the Republican governor and his wife Diamond medallion status worth just under $8,000. It makes the couple eligible for free seat upgrades, bonus frequent flier miles, priority check-in and fee waivers.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Deal received the gift two weeks after signing a law giving the airline a partial exemption from the fuel sales tax. The tax break was first passed in 2005 when Delta was in financial trouble. It's worth $30 million over two years.
Deal spokesman Brian Robinson said there was no connection between the tax break and Delta's gift.
