Chatham County is gearing up for an event that raises hundreds of thousands of dollars every year for cancer research.
But today, some Savannah students held their own version of Relay for Life, just on a smaller scale.
Children at St. Peter the Apostle School got sponsors and raised money for the American Cancer Society.
The school's principal, Sister Roberta Thoen, says the event is particularly important for the student body this year because several students have mothers battling cancer.
"I think it's important that they become aware of other people around them especially those who are sick and who need support, love, and care," Thoen said.
Sister Thoen promised her students that if they reached their $3,000 goal, she would dye her hair purple.
And since they did, Sister Thoen is now sporting some purple locks, even though she jokes she's not sure what her religious community will think.
