Copper theft is on the rise in the Lowcountry - bringing extra costs for an electric company and ultimately many of you. In the most recent case, $15,000 worth of materials was taken from the Marine Rescue Squadron in Hardeeville and the thieves also ripped copper from the electric poles which will be about $2,500 worth of repairs for Palmetto Electric Cooperative.
“As a member-owned electric utility, any time we have a loss like this it directly affects the rates we have to charge our members for the use of their electricity,” President Tom Upshaw Said.
Palmetto Electric is now offering $5,000 reward for leads to the arrest of whoever is behind this. If you can help, call 843-208-5551.
