(Hinesville, GA) Liberty County Sheriff Steve Sikes says as many as 70 sex offenders will be spending Halloween night with law enforcement officials. Sikes says letters have been sent to offenders in the area and their probation officers have been notified as well. Sikes says the group will be going to "a class" during the evening hours on Monday night. He told us it's to update the offenders on recent changes in law, but also acknowledged it's an effort to know the the whereabouts of offenders in the area on a night when children will be out trick or treating. "You can call it a program if you want or you can also call it a round up," Sheriff Sikes told us.
He says they've heard from a number of offenders who say they can't show up Monday evening because they are working. In that case, Sikes says law enforcement is in the process of getting letters from employers to verify that.
Sikes says he has been thinking about a program like this for several years. "I'm a grandfather," he told us. More on News 3 tonight at six.
