(Savannah, GA) Cholesterol is a wax-like substance in our bodies.
We all need it, but it's important to control our cholesterol.
Jamal wrote WSAV on facebook with this question.
"When it comes to cholesterol should we be concerned about how much our body produces naturally or how much we get from our diet?"
I took Jamal's question to Dr. Lucas Lewin at Saint Joseph's/Candler.
"Most of the cholesterol is produced naturally by the liver itself, and it has an important genetic background. So the diet can make the cholesterol worse, but basically its an inheritance problem that our parents and grandparents give to us. So it's very critical to go to your doctor and see what kind of cholesterol you have...good cholesterol...bad cholesterol."
Dr. Lewin says if your cholesterol is bad and high you should consider a treatment.
Diet alone will not reduce your cholesterol.
"New medications are coming out in the market. The statins have been for the last 20 or 30 years in the pharmacopeial doctors payoff, and thanks to that medication heart attacks have been reduced around 50 percent."
