The first meeting of the brand new city council is Thursday, and Mayor Edna Jackson apparently has named her right hand man.
In a message sent Wednesday evening, Alderman Tony Thomas said he has "ceded" the mayor pro tempore position to fellow Savannah City Council member Van Johnson.
Thomas released the following statement:
"I wanted to let you know that I have suspended my quest to become Mayor Pro Tem tonight. I have placed a call to Van Johnson to congratulate him. Through this process, I am grateful to those that had pledged their support for me. I was honored that they stuck by me but I have decided to end my quest rather than risk splitting this council and damaging Mayor Edna Jackson's beginning administration. The work ahead that we face is far too important than a symbolic position and will require the attention and efforts of all members of council. I have chosen to take this path rather than to divide us as some have tried to do in this process. I wish Alderman Johnson and Mayor Jackson the best of luck as they move this city forward."
