The man killed in yesterday's school bus accident in Tattnall County has been identified as a Fort Stewart soldier.

Sgt. Steven M. Coghlan, 30, of Glennville, died when his car crashed into a Tattnall County school bus turning left onto Highway 144 from Joe Kennedy Road at 6:30 a.m. Thursday, officials said.

Both vehicles caught fire.

Fort Stewart spokesman Kevin Larson says Sgt. Coghlan was a Georgia National Guard technician who worked at the Mobilization and Training Equipment Site, Georgia Garrison Training Center.

He was a wheel mechanic and squad leader with the 227th Maintenance Company on Fort Stewart.

The investigation between the Georgia State Patrol and Fort Stewart police determined that the school bus failed to yield to Sgt. Coghlan's vehicle as it turned west onto Highway 144.

Sgt. Coghlan was traveling east on Highway 144 into the Fort Stewart training area.

The school bus driver was uninjured.

There were no students on the bus.

The investigation has been turned over to Fort Stewart police and is on-going, officials said.
