(Savannah, GA) Marie Ulrey's legs are exposed a lot because she loves to play golf. Friday she took an important step to get rid of an unsightly problem varicose veins. She's relying on the expertise of veteran Savannah Vascular Surgeon Dr. William Darden.
"I've had some tingling my leg, and the reason I really came to have this done is because I didn't like the way it looked."
Marie suffers from venous reflux disease.
"In people that have reflux the valves don't work and when they stand up the blood stagnates in that vein and the little side branches called varicosities come up to the skin and some are as big as your little finger," says Dr. Darden.
A radio-frequency procedure called VNUS Closure is performed on Marie's left leg.
"This little gold is the element the heating element that the radiofrequency drives.
a protable ultra sound allows Dr. Durden to see the vein and access it."
"This goes inside the vein so it's in the vein and when it activates the vein will contact around it and advance it as it come down the leg."
As the catheter is being pulled back it collapses the vein.
Then the procedure is over…
Dr. Durden Expects Marie will have great results.
"It certainly will improve her symptoms and improve her lifestyle."
Once the surgery was over Marie's leg was wrapped with an ace bandage.
Before she left Marie said she could feel the difference.
There's not much down time...after relaxing today Marie will be able to move on with her normal activities tomorrow.
Marie will have to wear support hosiery for two weeks.
In case you're wondering, most insurance will cover the VNUS Closure procedure.
