Providing valuable job training for local students is the goal of a new Savannah Technical College facility.
Leaders from Savannah Tech, the Technical College System of Georgia, and Gulfstream were on hand to break ground on the school's new Aviation Training Center.
STC Board of Directors Chairman Jimmy Burnsed, Technical College System of Georgia Commissioner Ron Jackson, and Gulfstream Aerospace Senior Vice President of Administration and General Counsel Ira Berman were among those present for the groundbreaking.
The new building will be located at the school's Crossroads Campus and is more than 29,000 square feet. It includes a 5,000 square foot hangar, four special labs and classrooms.
Once complete, students will be able to take classes in aviation technology programs.
Though all schools have been dealing with limited funding because of the economy, school leaders said the facility serves an important purpose in our community.
"It's very difficult. All technical colleges have great industries, and they have great needs all over the state. It's our time now, particularly with this Gulfstream expansion that we can provide the workforce that they need," said Dr. Kathy Love, president of Savannah Technical College.
School officials said the goal is to have a Federal Aviation Administration certified program to serve businesses that need mechanics.
The center is set to open in 2013, and they hope to accommodate all students who want to enroll.
