One lowcountry non-profit is helping more than 10,000 neighbors a year live a healthier life. From financial counseling to adult and child education to free health screenings, the Neighborhood Outreach Connection is offering several programs to help bring the community together.
"A friend told me about it and I was a little bit scared cause I have a five year-old and that means I haven't had a baby in five years so I was a little bit scared about this pregnancy," says Enamorado. But she says she's learned a lot through these courses, making her more calm this time. And volunteers say education is a top priority. "The thing that we're really focused on is education and outreach, for them to come to us and improve their way of life," said Teresa Ullman, Field Director for NOC. Volunteers say that all of these courses are designed to promote a financially, intellectually, and physically healthy community.
For Enamorado this program's really had an impact.
"I think thank god a friend told me about it, cause I didn't know about some things, and now it helped me." For more information on the courses NOC offers, or how you can get involved go to http://noc-sc.org/
NOC offers a bevy of free courses to the community. including a prenatal preparation course for expectant mothers in Bluffton. This is one of many programs that served more than 20,000 neighbors in the last three years including Fanny Enamorado.
"Financially, because we have the workforce development classes and our partnership with other community services, mentally by teaching them how to really go for their goals, and educationally with the tutoring classes," said Ullman.
