A new child development center on Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island has a lot to boast about -- starting with an estimated annual electricity bill of $33!
The excitement over the new center on Parris Island is quite contagious -- because the bells and whistles are not only impressive, but as Brigadier General Lori Reynolds says, it's just what the families deserve.
"Any recruit in the Marine Corps will tell you that you have to take care of those family members. We recruit the Marines but we retain the families, so anything that we can do so the Marine or the sailor can go do what they need to do to get the mission done, we're all over that,” Reynolds said.
Taking a tour of the new facility, you'll see some of the standout features -- pinch-proof hinges on the doors, warm floors so little crawlers won't get cold, solar paneling that will help bring down their electric bill to under 50 dollars a year.
"These are truly, truly child development centers, not daycares,” SC Director of Marine Corps Community Services Gary Cassevh said. “Each one of our staff is trained. They go through different modules. They’re trained age specific. The prices that we offer are well, well below the general public. So we really subsidize this operation. It really does take care of the Marines' families while they are taking care of us. This is good stuff,” he said.
The new center will serve 240 children.
